Work Based Learning
Career Pathways
The Southwest Colorado Education Collaborative (SWCEC) focuses on a variety of career pathways informed by regional workforce demands. Each pathway highlights programs offered by regional high school and college partners. SWCEC prepares students for future careers through Work-Based Learning activities, such as guest speaker sessions, job and college fairs, hands-on experiences at job sites, and internships with industry partners.
By participating in these pathways, students gain the knowledge and skills necessary to secure family-sustaining wages in their chosen fields.

These courses help students explore child development, teaching methods, and practical skills essential for working with young learners. The program emphasizes the importance of high-quality education for children and prepares students for post-secondary teaching programs or immediate entry into ECE roles.

Educators can browse and check out equipment to integrate into their curriculum through a web-based portal called myTurn..

Futures Fairs
The Futures Fair connects middle and high school students with local employers, higher education institutions, and training providers to explore the many pathways available after graduation. The event is designed to help students discover careers, understand the skills needed in today’s workforce, and see how their interests can translate into real opportunities in our region.
At the Futures Fair, students engage directly with industry professionals and colleges through hands-on activities, conversations, and demonstrations. Rather than focusing on a single postsecondary option, the fair highlights a wide range of pathways, including careers in the trades, healthcare, hospitality, agriculture, technology, and more, alongside college and training programs that support those careers.
By bringing education and industry together in one space, the Futures Fair helps students build awareness, confidence, and clarity about their next steps while strengthening connections between schools and the regional workforce.
Career Days
Career Days offer students an in-depth, hands-on experience that goes beyond a traditional job shadow. These interactive days are designed to immerse students in real workplace environments, giving them meaningful exposure to careers through active participation, problem-solving, and direct engagement with industry professionals.
During a Career Day, students rotate through activities, demonstrations, and guided experiences that reflect the day-to-day work of a specific industry or career pathway. Students may use tools, practice technical skills, explore worksites, and learn how classroom learning connects to real-world applications. Just as importantly, they have opportunities to ask questions, hear personal career stories, and better understand the education, training, and skills required for success in the field.
Career Days help students build confidence, clarify interests, and develop a deeper understanding of career pathways available in Southwest Colorado, while strengthening connections between schools and local employers.
